Gas Chambers Banned in Rhode Island
At the 10th Annual Homeless Animals' Day, Defenders of Animals, Inc., honored Senator John J. 8/22/05 Senator Tassoni honored for fighting animal gas chambers
STATE HOUSE – The animal rights group Defenders of Animals recently honored Sen. John J. Tassoni, Jr. for sponsoring legislation that bans the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers for animal euthanasia.
He received the award at the group’s 10th annual Homeless Animals’ Day, which was held Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Pilgrim Senior Center in Warwick.
“I’m honored to receive such an meaningful award,” said Senator Tassoni, who represents District 22 in Smithfield and North Smithfield. “Defenders of Animals is an exemplary group that works tirelessly on behalf of needy animals in Rhode Island, and I’m always eager to help them in any way I can.
“I’m glad that we can finally eliminate the barbaric gas chambers in Rhode Island,” he continued. “There are other, more humane, ways to put an animal to sleep without causing it undue cruelty and torture.”
Defenders of Animals is a Rhode Island-based animal rights group that lobbies on behalf of legislative issues, coordinates a pet placement service, offers a low-cost spay and neuter program and does legal work on behalf of animals.
“This was quite an achievement,” said Dennis Tabella, the group’s director. “We’ve been trying to get gas chambers banned since 1980.”
The General Assembly passed Senator Tassoni’s bill (2005 - S0379Baa) July 1 and it became law without the governor’s signature on July 13. It provides for the disposal of animals by lethal injection only.
